What is Hypnosis all About?
Updated: Apr 28, 2019
“ Hypnosis is a state of mind in which the critical faculty of the human mind is bypassed and selective thinking is established.”
(Dave Elman, Hypnotherapy 1964)
Hypnosis covers a range of naturally occurring altered states of awareness induced by the therapist through relaxation and trance. Mental processes become more flexible and receptive whilst under hypnosis and changes can be achieved which may not occur in everyday states of consciousness.
At thehinterhypno we use hypnosis in a safe and flexible manner, tailored to each client individually. The hypnotherapist will guide you through instruction into a naturally occurring state of hypnosis. Through hypnosis we can establish selective thinking and bypass the critical factor to allow our clients to be receptive to hypnotic suggestions given during the session. These hypnotic suggestions are aimed at achieving positive and beneficial outcomes for the client.
HYPNOSIS IS SAFE
Hypnosis is safe and naturally occurring state that has been used by many professionals in medicine, dentistry and psychology for hundreds of years and is an accepted and recognised practice.
HYPNOSIS IS NOT “SLEEP”
Under hypnosis you are not asleep– the brainwaves in sleep and hypnosis are completely different. In fact you will most likely be more “conscious” as all levels of your mind are encouraged to work in sync.
MOST PEOPLE CAN EASILY ENTER INTO A STATE OF HYPNOSIS
As hypnosis is really just an altered and more relaxed state of mind each person will experience hypnosis and trance at different levels from deep to light. No one way is more right or more effective.
YOU CANNOT GET “STUCK” IN HYPNOSIS
In the history of hypnosis, no has ever been stuck in that state. Your hypnotherapist will guide you out of hypnosis safely and gently every time
WHAT PARTS OF THE MIND DO WE WORK WITH?
Some of the terms you may have heard about or will come across in relation to hypnosis relate to parts of the mind – the ones we seek to either bypass or access during hypnotherapy:
1: CONSCIOUS MIND
The conscious mind is filled with what we are attending to at any given moment. It is our problem solving mechanism and our protector but it is very limited. Our unconscious mind can only attend to 5-7 bits of information at any on time.
Because the conscious mind is so limited in capacity it is understandable that most people struggle to make significant and lasting changes in their lives with conscious effort alone.
HYPNOSIS CAN HELP YOU MAKE THE LASTING CHANGES YOU REALLY WANT BY ACCESSING THESE AT AN UNCONSCIOUS LEVEL.
2: CRITICAL FACTOR
Our critical factor acts as a comparing mechanism and filter between our conscious and unconscious mind protecting against perceived danger. It safeguards from unnecessary change the values, beliefs and habits that exist in our subconscious.
HYPNOSIS CAN BYPASS THE CRITICAL FACTOR ALLOWING THE CLIENT TO ACCEPT SUGGESTIONS FOR CHANGE AT BOTH A SUBCONSCIOUS AND UNCONSCIOUS LEVEL.
3: UNCONSCIOUS MIND
The unconscious mind is really made up of two parts:
The Subconscious Mind is like our database, with unlimited storage capacity. It gathers information and experiences throughout our life. This information defines who we are and what we do on a consistent basis. Our subconscious mind will seek to protect us and will resist change even when we feel that we need to change the way we think, feel or behave. The Unconscious Mind is the part of the body’s consciousness which we consider to have been developed before you were born – that fully programmed consciousness that keeps your body running – it knows how to breathe, how to fight infection, how to digest food, etc. The unconscious mind is also very trainable and often times it can be programmed to act in a way that is not beneficial for us. It can generate symptoms such as headaches or stomach pains as a means of avoiding stressful situations and it can also cause us to seek out unhealthy substances if it believes that it will assist us to cope with a situation or relax or feel comfort.
HYPNOSIS CAN BE USED TO OVERCOME RESISTANCE AND EFFECT THOSE DESIRED CHANGES IN A WAY THAT USING THE CONSCIOUS MIND ALONE CAN RARELY ACCOMPLISH AND HYPNOSIS CAN BE USED TO OVERCOME ACCIDENTAL PROGRAMMING THAT IS LIMITING YOUR POTENTIAL.
So knowing what you know now you can see that hypnosis is a safe way to explore those areas of your mind that might be limiting you and also to discover a way to rid yourself of those limiting and sometimes painful beliefs and sensations so that you can reach your full potential.
